Periodontal disease is associated with heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other systemic diseases. It is also the primary cause of tooth loss. Periodontal disease is seen when someone develops inflammation of the gums, attachment loss, and loss of bone around the tooth creating “pocket” areas. We initially treat periodontal disease with Scaling and root planning of the teeth to remove the buildup underneath the gums. We also recommend frequent maintenance appointments to prevent progression of periodontal disease. If caught at the earliest stage, gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), scaling may not be necessary, although close follow up and homecare will have to be addressed.

Signs of periodontal disease:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Bleeding when brushing (pink toothbrush), or at other times
  • Aching, itchy, sore or tender gums
  • Receding gums (teeth beginning to look longer)
  • Pus between your teeth and gums when you press down on the gums
  • Bad breath
  • Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • Loose, separating or protruding teeth Spaces between teeth
