Periodontal disease is associated with heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other systemic diseases. It is also the primary cause of tooth loss. Periodontal disease is seen when someone develops inflammation of the gums, attachment loss, and loss of bone around the tooth creating “pocket” areas. We initially treat periodontal disease with Scaling and root planning of the teeth to remove the buildup underneath the gums. We also recommend frequent maintenance appointments to prevent progression of periodontal disease. If caught at the earliest stage, gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), scaling may not be necessary, although close follow up and homecare will have to be addressed.
